Just some of the comments received as the 4th Blackthorn British Skittles Championship came to its conclusion at Sand Bay Holiday Village, Weston-Super-Mare on Saturday 22nd September. After nearly 5 months of gruelling group and knockout phases, qualifying teams from all over the country gathered for the Grand Final. Amazing performances by all teams concluded in three finals of epic proportions in which teams from Gloucester landed all the honours.
The prize money of £1,000, trophies, Blackthorn goodies and the coveted title of Blackthorn British Skittles Champions for 2007 were awarded as follows:
Men’s Champions: Gloster Gladiators from Gloucester
Ladies Champions: Coleford Bowlovers from Coleford
Mixed Champions: 10CC from Bibury
Runners-up in each event receiving £500, trophy and Blackthorn goodies were as follows:
Men’s runners-up: Joey’s from Peasedown St. John near Bath
Ladies runners-up: Baker Street Follies from Gloucester
Mixed runners-up: Wolves from Paignton, Devon
The last 16 teams of each of the 3 events got the ball rolling at Sand Bay Holiday Village, Weston-Super-Mare on Saturday 22nd September. For teams that fell at the first hurdle, a plate event was held and the results were as follows:
Men’s plate winners: Highwaymen from Worcester
Men’s plate runners-up: Motley Crew from Weymouth, Dorset
Ladies plate winners: Wyke Orbits from Weymouth, Dorset
Ladies plate runners-up: High Flyers from Barry, Wales
Mixed plate winners: Dave’s Battlers from Chippenham, Wiltshire
Mixed plate runners-up: Deaf Mixed from Bristol
The Press Officer award was won by Brian Sage from Wrington Sports for presenting the best local press coverage for the event. Runner-up was Paul Watkins of Uffculme Bellies and third place was taken by John Cooke of Bath City.
All 48 teams who reached the Grand Finals received free accommodation sponsored by Hollybush Hotels Ltd. for the Saturday night and were entertained by top comedian Tank Sherman with disco and Karaoke.
