Championship 2005

In 2005 the Shoot Out Club staged the 2nd Blackthorn British Skittle Championships.

It was a resounding success. An army of teams both new to the championships and stalwarts from 2004 staking another claim for the title, battled it out for the honours.

It all began in the summer and during that time Brian and Rachel took to the road and visited over 20 home alleys clocking hundreds of miles in the process. "It was great to see the camaraderie between teams and the diversity of the skittle alleys, pins and balls in different regions of the country." said Rachel. All venues competed for Home Alley of the Year and this was again won by the Working Men's Club at Weston-Super-Mare, home to AKA Predators, Angels and Galacticos. The award was presented by Bath Rugby Club fly half Chris Malone. A great many photos were taken at the Home Alley matches - these can be viewed here.

The 16 teams that qualified for each of the Men's, Ladies and Mixed events provided competition of the highest standard and it was congratulations to The Skimmers on retaining their Men's Champions crown, Ever Hopefuls on their Ladies Champions title at the first attempt and AKA Predators, runners-up from 2004, taking the Mixed title.

New to the 2005 championship was the introduction of the Singles and Pairs events, which took part on the Friday night and was a great addition to the weekend experience for those team that took part.

Also, in 2005, the championships introduced the Plate event for all teams who were knocked out in the first round of the Grand Finals. This provided more action for those unlucky teams exiting the championships earlier than hoped.

Press Officer of the year, another new addition to the award portfolio, was won by John Cook from the Bath City team, for obtaining the best local coverage for the event. John was awarded £150 and a Blackthorn patio heater worth £180. Runner-up in second place was Shaun Malone (AKA Predators) winning £50 plus a Blackthorn sports bag and Joan Baker from The Spudlers took third winning a cheque for £25 and a Blackthorn golf umbrella.

Thank you to all teams for taking part and making 2005 a superb event!

All winning teams received cheques for £1000 and runners-up received £500 sponsored by Blackthorn.
